Trigger thumb is a condition that causes pain and difficulty when bending or flexing and straightening the thumb. Trigger thumb occurs when the flexor tendon in the thumb becomes inflamed, causing it to catch or lock in place when moving. Symptoms include a clicking or snapping sensation when moving the thumb, pain or tenderness, and a tender lump at the base of the thumb on the palm side of the hand. Risk factors include diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and forceful hand activities.
